Petr Keil vystudoval zoologii na Jihočeské univerzitě, poté na University of Cambridge pracoval na výzkumu akustiky cvrččích zpěvů, následně si vysloužil PhD na Katedře ekologie UK, kde se věnoval makroekologii. Vedle toho působil na University of Leeds, kde zkoumal neutrální modely biodiverzity a problém prostorového měřítka v geografické ekologii. V letech 2011-2014 působil na Yale University (USA). Zkoumá globální patrnosti biodiverzity a vyvíjí statistické metody pro prostorově explicitní data.
