What was the long-term impacts of prehistoric people on the biosphere and its dynamics? Can uniformitarianism - the present is the key to the past - be maintained as a fundamental working concept in Earth system science? HOPE is ERC-funded (Advanced Grant) interdisciplinary project combining palaeo-ecology, archaeology, climatology, and data science to quantitatively assess the global impact of humans on basic ecological properties of ecosystems.
