Graduated from CU, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and earned his PhD from the same faculty for his work Thesis Generator Classes in Set theory in 1966. He has repeateadly visited (medium term) many universities: Technical University, Delft (1989 and 1994), Penn. State University, USA (1992, 1994) McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (1990, 1999), etc.

Presently he is a senior researcher at the CTS and teaches advanced students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the CU. He is chairman of the organizing committee of the "Winter School on Abstract Analysis", (since 1989) and was vice-chairman of the organizing commitee of 7th and 8th Prague Topological Symposium (1991 and 1996). He is a member of European Mathematical Society.

In 2010 B. Balcar and T. Jech received the Shoenfield Prize for the article Weak distributivity, a problem of Von Neumann and the mystery of measurability (see below).
