Using networks to model urban structure is not new. However, the study of cities has seldom been quantative or algorithmic. In the first part of this talk, we will show that describing urban patterns as complex networks of connected urban elements might lead to new insights into the complexity of urban systems. In the second part we will discuss the key aspects of sustainable urban design strategies that should consider urban landscapes as dynamic spatial-temporal system, responsive to changes and transformations, both structural and functional.
