Biologist, palaeoecologist and environmental archaeologist. He deals with the postglacial development of the landscape and the mutual relationship between nature and civilization. He specializes in the research of plant remains, especially pollen analysis. In his work, he combines the approaches of several traditional disciplines - ecology, botany, archeology and Quaternary geology. He teaches at the Faculty of Science of the Charles University and occasionally also at other faculties of the Charles University and other universities.
He is also devoted to the popularization of science. He is active in the editorial boards of scientific periodicals (Preslia, Archeologické rozhledy, Fossil Imprint, Prague Egyptological Studies) and in the field of nature conservation (the chairman of the Cross-Border Scientific Council of the Czech and Saxon Switzerland National Parks and a member of the Scientific Council of the UNESCO Czech Paradise Global Geopark).
