Other Seminars and Events
There are two regular seminars organized by CTS.
The Thursday seminar is open to the wider academic public, and consists of independent talks by members and visitors of CTS. The Monday seminars are more or less internal, devoted each semester to systematic study of a particular problem typically encountered by several disciplines. In addition, CTS hosts a number of other seminars focused on specific themes or disciplines. For instance, we organize: "Occasional Mathematical Series". The Occasional Mathematical Series, organized since the beginning of 2023, is an interdisciplinary seminar focused on mathematical methods from across scientific fields. The seminar aims to explore connections and overlaps across disciplines. The universal language of mathematics serves as a suitable tool for discovering interdisciplinary connections. Among the scientific fields presented in the Occasional Mathematical Series are biology (lectures by Jan Smyčka, David Storch, and Petr Tureček), economics (lectures by Marek Hudík and Jakub Steiner), machine learning (lectures by Tomáš Gavenčiak and Lenka Zdeborová), and physics (lecture by Roman Kotecký). The covered mathematical methods frequently include topics from game theory, information theory, and probability theory. The language of the seminar is English. The Series is attended both internally and by scientists from allied institutions such as CERGE-EI. To encourage lively discussions, presenters are encouraged to deliver informal presentations using chalk and board rather than slides. Sociology and Philosophy of Science From 2022 to 2026, we co-organised a regular research seminar that was also open to interested students. The seminar was organised by Jan Maršálek (Institute of Philosophy of the CAS), Zdeněk Konopásek (CTS), and Lukáš Hadwiger Zámečník (Palacký University Olomouc). The seminar focused on texts and topics in the field of science and technology studies, with a particular focus on physics in 2022–2024. Emphasis was placed on the complex and ambiguous relationships between sociological and philosophical approaches to the subject matter. The seminar resulted in a series of six articles published in the Czechoslovak Journal of Physics in 2022–2023. Building on the seminar, the organisers also worked on the TAČR project Scientific Literacy for a Resilient Society in the 21st Century (2023–2026). AJP Seminars The Jan Patočka Archive holds two regular seminars each week focused on the thought of Jan Patočka and authors related to his work. The first seminar consists of continuous reading and interpretation of Jan Patočka's texts, while in the second one, we primarily read texts by Jiří Němec in a similar manner (this seminar is conducted in cooperation with Triáda publishing house). There are also Off-site Meetings twice a year. Besides these events, CTS organizes various conferences, workshops, and summer and winter schools.
